Barentain Dei

Barentain Dei
Barentain Dei is apart of the Love Project - a series of participatory art pieces exploring the topic of love. Barentain Dei follows suit from a suggestion from Bell Hooks, All About Loving, where she states “Imagine how much easier it would be for us to learn how to love if we began with a shared definition.” By inviting people to write their definition of love, we can develop an understanding of what love means to people on a broad scale.
The installation takes inspiration from Japanese shrines and participants were asked to answer the question "What does love mean to you?" on an Ema (response card) to be hanged on the shrine. Piggybacking off Japan's Valentines Day, Barentain Dei, which takes place on February 14 - this day is celebrated a bit differently from its western counterparts due to act of chocolate given to men by women. They're (11) known types of chocolate gifts that can be given and recieved. The most common ones are honmei-choco (or kokuhaku): chocolate that is given to men of romantic interests and giri choco (or obligatory chocalate): which is given to men of platonic relations such as coworkers, acquaintaines and friends.
Materials Used: cardboard, duct tape, wooden dowels.
